On 29 August 2026, Pirin Golf & Country Club welcomed Estates & Fairways for the second consecutive year. Organised by Bulgaria Sotheby’s International Realty, the golf tournament has evolved into far more than a sporting occasion. It brings together people who value quality, trust and refined taste in every aspect of life.
A Game with Five Centuries of History
Golf is one of the world’s oldest organised sports, with origins tracing back to fifteenth-century Scotland. The earliest written reference to the game dates from 1457, when King James II banned “golf” and football by royal decree, not because he considered them immoral, but because they distracted men from compulsory archery practice, which was vital to the country’s defence at the time. The prohibition did little to deter players. On the contrary, it offered the first indication of just how deeply golf had already become embedded in Scottish life.
The word “golf” itself is believed to derive from the old Scots word “gowf”, meaning to strike or deliver a powerful blow. The spiritual home of the game remains St Andrews, known to this day as the “Home of Golf”. It was there that the Royal and Ancient Golf Club was founded in 1754 and established the first official rules of the game. A decade later, in 1764, St Andrews introduced the standard 18-hole round, the format followed around the world to this day.
Beyond its formal rules, golf is also defined by a collection of unwritten traditions that distinguish it from almost every other sport:
- The honour of the game: Golf is one of the few sports in which players keep their own scores. There is no referee at every hole; the game relies entirely on each participant’s personal integrity.
- The handicap system: It allows players of different abilities to compete together on equal terms, rather than limiting the game to only the most accomplished.
- The etiquette of silence: Respect for the concentration of fellow players is deeply embedded in the culture of the course.
- The “nineteenth hole”: The affectionate name given to the clubhouse bar or lounge where the day traditionally concludes and the game continues through conversation.
Perhaps the most important tradition, however, is one of attitude. Golf has never been a sport of ostentatious display. Success is measured by the precision of the shot, not the gesture that follows it. It is a philosophy remarkably close to that of the discreet luxury real estate market, where true value is rarely proclaimed aloud.
The Second Edition of Estates & Fairways
Estates & Fairways is an exclusive golf tournament organised by Bulgaria Sotheby’s International Realty, a name synonymous with prestige, trust and uncompromising standards in the global luxury real estate market. On 29 August, the tournament once again brought together investors, diplomats, business leaders and long-standing partners of the company for a complete experience in which golf provided the natural setting, while meaningful conversations and new connections became its continuation.
The second edition followed the tournament’s established format:
- An individual Stableford competition, with players divided into two divisions;
- Limited participation, with up to 85 individually invited players;
- An exclusive gala dinner for participants and special guests;
- An official awards ceremony.
The tournament’s guests traditionally included members of the diplomatic community and international partners, established business leaders and entrepreneurs from a variety of industries, investors and clients with an interest in luxury properties and assets, as well as long-standing partners and friends of Sotheby’s. This carefully selected audience made the event an exceptionally effective platform for meaningful networking and the cultivation of lasting relationships built on trust.
The day unfolded in a spirit of sportsmanship, with close attention paid to every detail. Following the final shots, guests gathered for the gala dinner and awards ceremony, during which the company extended its special thanks to the partners and sponsors whose support helped make the event possible.
The Partners Behind Estates & Fairways
The event would not have been possible without the support of a carefully selected group of partners, each of whom shares Sotheby’s commitment to quality, enduring value and meticulous attention to detail.
Bang & Olufsen is renowned for its uncompromising standards, attention to detail and pursuit of exceptional experiences. During the evening programme, guests had the opportunity to discover the brand’s distinctive fusion of design, technology and sound.
RUHouse is an architect-founded company creating contemporary residential developments that combine strong architectural design, functionality and a high-quality living environment.
Decantus Wines provided the wines for the evening, contributing to the warm and convivial atmosphere of the gala dinner.
Bulgarian Golf Tours organised the tournament itself, while Pirin Golf & Country Club hosted the event. Both distinguished themselves through their professionalism, hospitality and attention to every organisational detail.
The Philosophy Behind the Tournament
For Bulgaria Sotheby’s International Realty, golf provides a natural setting for bringing people together. The company’s work has long extended beyond the presentation of exceptional properties. As part of one of the world’s most recognisable international luxury real estate networks, and with an in-depth understanding of the Bulgarian market, it connects people with places, opportunities and lifestyles that reflect their aspirations.
“Today’s tournament is also our way of thanking you for your trust. It is an honour to have you with us and to continue building, together, a community in which professionalism, refined taste and genuine human relationships hold lasting value,” said Hristo Angelkov, Managing Partner of Bulgaria Sotheby’s International Realty.
Estates & Fairways brought into a contemporary setting the very qualities that golf has preserved for centuries: a game with no need for ostentation, an environment founded on trust and mutual respect, and the understanding that true value rarely needs to announce itself loudly.
We look back on this year’s tournament with warm memories and eagerly anticipate its third edition.
